Program

Given the importance of writing both on the TOEFL test and for academic success in general, Boston ACE offers a Writing Clinic for English Learners. After administering a pre and post test assessment around writing, Boston ACE’s tutors will work with students to do the following:

• improve basic writing skills such as constructing sentences and linking paragraphs
  
  
• write essays, research papers, and other academic papers
  
  
• develop or clarify an idea for a writing assignment or creative endeavour
  
  
• understand cultural distinctions and expectations which can interfere with a nonnative speaker's ability to write clearly in academic English
  
  
• correctly cite sources and avoid plagiarism
  
  
• read critically and contextually to learn how to develop ideas for writing

Because writing is a heuristic process, Boston ACE’s tutors will work out an individual schedule that will include coaching, journaling, creative writing, and brainstorming. Our tutors are trained in the Collins Writing Method popular in many U.S. high schools and will be assigned FCAs (focused correction areas) with each writing prompt.

Students may sign up for an initial 60-minute session in which they will be assessed on writing interest and proficiency. Students should bring a piece of their own writing such as a homework assignment or a writing sample to this first session. Due to the self-guided nature of the sessions, students should be prepared to spell out their concerns and troublesome areas so that the tutor may design a customized tutoring plan to be conducted on an on-going basis.
